Optical Media Volume Label Issue

Posted: 04-12-2004, 06:50 PM

Hi,

How is everybody doing.

This is something I came across on of of my PC's a starting a few days ago:

Whenever I insert an optical media - DVD or CD disc- the volume label comes
up in My Computer as it should.

But when the media is ejected the volume label name does not go off as it
always did before. It will stay on till the next boot. The name does not
change even if a different disc is subsequently into the drive! The drive
reads all inserted discs fine, even though it does not display the correct
volume label name.

I also found that when I am in Windows Explorer, if I rename any folder in
the left panel, the new name does not show till I exit and restart Windows
Explorer. If I change the name of a folder in the right panel, the change
does go through - sometimes.

I could not correlate this peculiarity with anything I do on this machine.
Incidentally, this PC is off my network and is standalone for the moment.

This phenomenon does not interfere with operations at all though.

I just wanted to know what this could mean and if it is an indication of
something wrong or about to be so.

Thanks in advance for any illumination on this issue.

Everybody have a very nice day

Shiva

It sounds like your operating system just isn't updating the listing of
files, folders, and drive labels as they change. That's odd. I suspect it
would be an issue with some setting in the operating system, or perhaps some
performance issue, but I'm not sure.

Try refreshing in the 'my computer' area after you insert another optical
media. The label should hopefully change then. Also try refreshing in
Windows Explorer after you make changes to the names of files or folders.
You can usually refresh by clicking 'view' and then 'refresh.'
