OT - Wireless hub question

Posted: 06-25-2007, 02:02 PM
What would be the most likely reason(s) for a wireless hub to stop providing
service both locally and to the internet, requiring it to powered off and
then back on before working normally again?

Reason I ask is I have used my wireless hub without a problem for weeks now,
and today it just disconnected from me without apparent reason while I was
reading through newsgroups. I went and checked it first - it had power okay,
and there was no-one else in the house. My laptop usually gets a good
signal, and I wasn't moving around with it, just using it in its usual
place.

It's probably a bug in the wireless hub. It's possible that the
manufacturer of your device has released a fix. Check their web site for
updated firmware.

It's been my experience that most home-oriented wireless devices hang
occasionally, especially when a heavy load of traffic is applied. For
example, I have two major-brand wireless router/access points. They hang
about one time in three if I run backups over the wireless. I've seen issues
like this with several of the major brands.

Sometimes problems like this become more likely the longer it's been since
the device was rebooted. A friend of mine routinely reboots every network
device in his house weekly to avoid such problems.

You might check the vendor-specific forums on broadbandreports.com to see if
others have found a solution for your specific device, or to find a
replacement that doesn't have these issues.

Hope this helps.

It does handle a high traffic, but if I only need to reset it every few
months I guess I can live with that ;-) More curious than anything at this
stage, if it gets more frequent I'll dig deeper for a fix.

Was wondering about static, power surges, mobile phones etc etc interfering
or maybe the ISP just had a short maintenance cycle?

If you are running b/g wireless in the 2.4GHz band, microwave ovens
and cordless phones that use the 2.4GHz band can cause interference.
