You might want to try deleting the printer port in Device Manager then scan
for hardware changes and let Windows re-detect and install.

I'm not sure what else to try without more information. Is this a new
manufactured printer or a used one? If old, are you sure it is approved to
work with Windows XP? Also, make sure you have the most recent XP drivers
for it. Some devices require a specific order of install, such as running
the setup program, then rebooting, for example.

Hi Bill,
thank you for your help.
It was one of the first things I tried, but after re-
detecting parallel port I've just uninstalled, system
tries to install my printer (which it correctly
identifies!), but the wizard breaks with the message "The
environment specified is invalid", which to me means that
it doesn't see parallel port. How to show it to not
so "wizardly" Wizard?
