passwords and printers???

Posted: 07-18-2003, 02:53 AM
Hello all,

I have a small LAN at home, it's comprised of a WinXP SP1 box, Win2k SP3,
WinXP SP1 (#2).
I have a usb printer attached to my first xp box (shared), if I try to
install the printer on either one of the other machines it says access
denied. I've checked all the correct security permissions on the printer.
On my winxp box I logon as Administrator without a password. Now that has
something to do with the problem because if I add a password to that account
and then try to install the printer from the other machine it asks for the
username and pass and all works well. I do not want a password at all. So
is there some deal with xp not allowing blank passwords? Is there a way
around this? Thanks in advance for any help.

There is a security setting in Windows XP that prohibits the use of blank
(null - empty) passwords for local user accounts (e.g. Administrator) over
network connections.

To disable this setting:

1. click Start, Administrative Tools, (or Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools) Local Security Policy
2. navigate down through Local Policies and click Security Options
3. double click on "Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to
console logon only"
4. select the Enabled radio button
5. click OK

However, leaving the Administrator account without a (good) password is
leaving your system very vulnerable to security breaches. Make sure you
have a firewall for your Internet connection and that it is blocking all
incoming network connections.

It is perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question.
