Re: PC with win98 can't read laptop HD [xp]

Hi

Thanks for the advice - a couple of questions
1) how do I reset the jumper on the laptop drive so that
it isn't a master. I did fiddle about with a plastic
attachment that goes across 2 pins on my CDROM and put
them in a couple of combinations over the 4 pins that are
separated from the others on hte laptop drive.

I tried various ways of inserting the broad wire [?bus]
from the computer to the convertor but couldn't seem to
get the right comination - either nothing happened or the
PC just froze completely until I detached the wires.

2) How do I run the stinger - I cannot get into xp at all
and will not be able to disable system restore as they
recommend.
Does this matter. Do I simply need to download the
software with my pc, copy it onto a floppy and then insert
it into the laptop before booting up??

Many Thanks!

Let me see if I understand: you want to connect a virus-infected hard drive
to a non-infected computer so that you can have two virus-infected
computers?

If your XP machine is formatted as NTFS, your Windows 98 machine will not be
able to access the disk. It will be reported as a "Non-DOS" disk.

:-)

Never thought of that!

What can I do to retrieve my data?? Will doing a patch
install of winxp solve the problem?
How does one get rid of the virus?

Please advise

Hi

Norton AntiVirus 2004 and Norton system works 2004 are bootable
Try boot from it and perform a virus check
However, it may not cure the latest virus as the virus definitions on the CD is not up to date

BTY, have you tried to boot in safe mode
If you can, boot in safe mode with network connection
Then go to symantec.com to have an on-line virus check and then download and run the appropriate virus remover

The jumper is the little plastic part. It has metal
contacts inside which complete the connection across the
pins. There should be a picture on a label of the jumper
positions.

Stinger can be run from a floppy but it will need an OS to
running. If you don't turn system restore off, the virus
will still be in the system restore files, nut it doesn't
run there. After you run Stinger once, turn system restore
off and run it again.

Jim: Laptop drives generally don't have master/slave jumpers as they are
made to be the only drive on bus.

Is the Hard Drive NTFS? If it is then 98 won't know what to do with it.
