PC wont power off? RC2 X64

Posted: 10-07-2006, 10:33 PM
Hi all.

Fresh install, Bios not touched.

It hung during install at one point when it tried to reboot, had to reset.
System now up and running almost fine, but when I shut it down, the monitor
and USB devices switch off but the PC remains on.

If I press any key on the keyboard, the USB devices spring into life, but
the monitor remains off (this is exactly the same state as when it hung
during install). I have to hold in power button to turn off (or press reset
button)

Have tried typing "shutdown -s -t 0" and the same thing happens.

Anyone else experianced this?

I'll send in a bug report.

It's a dual boot machine and my other op system reboots and powers off fine.

In that case - I think I'll stick with RC1 for the time being

You are likely going to have to wait for a bios update from your M/B
manufacturer.

Many experienced the same issue when Windows XP came out. When a new bios
flash was made available the complaints stopped overnight.

Possibly, but it worked fine with the previous two rc1 builds.

Probably a dumb question - Are you using the right shut down? As you know
Vista has two "shut down" options - one "button" shuts down monitor, etc.
and puts computer in sleep mode - the other "button" turns computer
completely off.

Hi.
This is what happened to me, since the installation of Vista RC2 (x86):
I've done three clean installs of Windows Vista RC2 on this computer, in a
third partition of a SATA HD (the other two are from Windows XP (system and
my documents respectively)) and every time that the installation program
wants to restart the computer, it collapses in a black screen with a simple
cursor that is always blinking.
At this time, my USB wireless keyboard doesn't react with any instruction
(like activating Num Lock, i.e.). All I had to do is restart manually, and
the system follows the installation (after the restart). Later, when it has
to restart again, it happens the same thing.
Ok, that's from the installing process. But now that Vista is installed, my
computer still doesn't turn off.
I sent a report to Microsoft... so I hope to get some kind of solution for
this issue, even when they say this build has not the same level of support
than the others...
(Sorry, I think I like talking )
Best wishes for all of you...

Exactly the same problem here.
Neither shut down or restart works, the pc jsut goes to a blank screen and
then monitor turns off.
Have to press the reset button or push the shut down button, to get the
desired effect.
Have been running Beta 2 , Rc1 5600 and 5728 and had no problems, just Rc2
build 5744 has issues.
