Default Permissions

Hello,
I'm currently experiencing problems with the permissions.
I have set myself up as the administrator however, I'm
still denied to load ing programs. recently I tried to
disable the RPC notification and after I typed in
Services, msc I pressed enter, but a dialog box came up
stating I didn't have permission to do this and I need to
get the administrator. I am the only one logged on to
this computer, so how can I fix this problem?

Much appreciated
Phyllis

Default Re: Permissions

If you were getting the RPC notification, then you have a worm and you need
to eradicate it before going any further:
You have the Blaster Worm:
For a quick, small removal tool for W32.Blaster.Worm, see

Default Permissions

Where can I set the guest account permissions? I don't
want that account to be able to change like backgrounds,
etc. But I also want the two other administrative
accounts to be able to do anything. How do I do that?

Default Re: Permissions

This should be automatic. The guest account is quite limited in what it can
do.

As to the administrator accounts, they can do the things you have requested.
If you have XP Pro, you can set up groups and be quite specific about
setting permissions but you need to use the Group Policy Editor. You can
find more information about GPE at the following website:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;307882

Group Policy Editor is unavailable in XP Home Edition.

Default Permissions

I moved My Documents, My Music, and My Pictures to my D drive:
D:\My Documents
D:\My Music
D:\My Pictures

I have tried to change the security to allow all users of my Windows XP Pro computer to be able to view and play the music files stored in the My Music folder and to view the pictures stored in the My Pictures folders. I do not want to allow users to remove, change, or add files to either of these folders.

Additionally, I want to restrict access to My Documents only to myself.

The problems I am having are:
1.. I cannot figure out a way to limit "write" access to these folders only to myself or the computer administrators. When I check the "deny" box on the \Users user name, I get a message saying that "deny" over rides "allow", for all groups. This locks me out too.

2.. Also, when I check the"Read" "deny" box for \Users on the security tab of My Documents, it locks me out from viewing my own "My Documents" folder.
I am not trained on networks and although my PC is a home PC (not networked), the permissions on Windows XP seem to be concepts that require a trained network adminsitrator to figure them out. I simply want to be able to share music and pictures stored on my PC with members of my household without allowing anyone to delete files or read personal information in My Documents.
