persistent Safely Remove Hardware icon in systray

Having recently bought an HP 2175 all-in-one printer I installed the software first as the literature suggested. During that process the screen progressed to actually hooking up the device, a step at the time I wasn't ready for so I closed the install and ejected the disc. There had previously been an HP 932 printer with their LTZ software which I uninstalled after beginning the new install. I'd also purchased a Stratitec (generic) 4-in-1 USB 2.0 hub, which came with no disc. Now I'm faced with the Safely Remove Hardware window showing three psc 2170 (DOT4PRINT) 'branches' and a USB Mass Storage Device icon with both an HPpsc2175 USB Device and a Generic volume- (D) branch. Which ones should be removed? Would uninstalling/reinstalling both new devices provide a solution?

Am running XPPro on a 933 PIII Dell 4100 w/512Mb Ram.

gracias in advance, sportsfans

I've read this three times and still can't figure out what problem you're
trying to solve. What isn't working correctly?

Sorry, it did seem a bit rambling. My issue is with the Safely Remove Hardware icon that sits in the System Tray. Whether I cold-start or re-boot it remains. Below are the descriptions of what it is suggesting (my presumption here) to remove. My question is: has anyone encountered this activity before, and would uninstalling/reinstalling the new HP software do any good?

That icon is there so that you can safely "stop" a removable device, so that you can unplug it without causing damage. It probably isn't going to bother a printer much if you unplug it while it's running, but you wouldn't want to unplug a removable USB hard drive while you're writing to the drive.

In other words, it's supposed to be there, and it's not an error message, nor is it asking you to remove something. If it bothers you to see it there, you can set it to "always hide" in the taskbar settings.
