Hi all,

Have you enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP on the XP computer?
Control Panel | Network Connections
Go to Properties of appropriate connection
Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
Click on the Properties button
Click on the Advanced button
Click on the Wins tab
Select Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP
OK
OK
Close
Close Network Connections
Try ping -a

I have a home wifi with xp, 2k, and 98se computers. When I do a ping -a I
get the host name provided for the computer I'm pinging unless I'm on my xp
machine in which case I only get the IP number. Why can't xp provide
hostname for ping -a?

Jim,

I'd bet you have a firewall somewhere blocking name resolution
(similar to file sharing). Start with the XP computer, then check the
others. Disable ICF, un install any third party firewall if you can.

Once you have identified the cause of the problem, re install the
firewall (if required) and configure properly.

Cheers,
Chuck
