Hi, John.

Start | Control Panel | System | Hardware | Device Manager. Double-click on
the controller for your CD or other device (probably under IDE ATA/ATAPI
controllers), then the Advanced Settings tab. For each device, in the
Transfer Mode box, select DMA if available.

Since there are many different CD/DVD drives out there and they use
different interfaces (IDE, USB, etc.), you may have to search in Device
Manager to find the right one for your computer. Win9x/ME had the DMA
settings under each device (drive); WinXP sets it under each controller
channel instead.
