Play All in XP not working

bringing up the media player. No error messages displayed.
Just makes a grinding noise as though it's trying to load
something but, nothing happens. I've had this problem from
the start after upgrading my OS from Win98 to WinXP. I
trid re-installing XP twice and nothing seems to work.
Is there a configuration where this is addressed either in
XP or the Media itself. It is Window Media 9 Series.
I'll appreciate any input for this small annoyance.
