Play with registry or can do with control panel?

Hi gurus,
My question is about the Desktop folder and the Favorites folder inside
the local profile of XP users. The question is: Can these folders be
redirected to a different drive instead of the C:\Documents and
Settings\<user> folder? Can this be done using the Control Panels
and/or by playing inside the Registry?

In my workplace LAN, there's a file server and a bunch of clients
running Win XP Pro each. Any staff can log on to any client PC, and
this is random everyday. Upon login, he/she sees an N: drive with a
folder in his/her name to store documents. Obviously, the N: drive is a
shared folder from the server mapped on the client.

Despite all directions to staff to store their files on the N: drive,
many forgot and left important and/or huge files/folders on their
desktop. In many instance, this ate the C: drive space, when a staff
goes for the first time on a certain client, his/her huge roaming
profile won't fit in the remaining space, i.e. unable to login. I had
to go manually as Administrator to delete unacceptably-huge local
profiles in order to retrieve some space on the C: drive.

My idea is to assign the Desktop forlder, the Favorites folder, and the
Application Data folder to the N:\<user> instead of the C:\Documents
and Settings\<user> if possible. I know this can be done for the My
Documents folder so I hope you have a solution for the other key
folders of the person's local profile.

Thanks gurus in advance.

Have you checked out Folder Redirection via Group Policy? You can
redirect the entire profiles directory for each user.

There are also third party apps that help you redirect the location of
folders such as MY Documents, My Pictures, My Music, Desktop, Favorites and
My Videos to another hard drive. One utility is my Microsoft called TweakUI
and another called Folder Redirector
(http://windowsxp.mvps.org/folderredirector.htm)and both are freeware.
