You'd be wise /not/ to follow Gerry's advice as it does nothing to solve the
real problem of which the ads are merely a symptom.

You need to install and configure a firewall (the native one is fine, though
it does nothing for outgoing traffic only incoming). The problem is, you
see, that the spammers are exploiting open ports. By using a firewall to
block them you solve both problems at once and you also protect your system
from other nasties.

The popups are only a symptom of open ports on your computer. These popups
are uaually spawned by spyware. 1) downlaod and run "adaware" and "spybot"
to remove them. 2) install a firewall. Disabling the messenger service also
stops relevant popups too.
