popping sounds

I installed XP-Pro a few weeks ago and since then my tunes make these
annoying popping sounds, especially noticable during a quieter song. My car
cd player plays the tunes without popping I have windows media player 9.0 I
have tried numerous things half of which i dont even remember but no luck so
far. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
