Possible virus

I would like to know what's causing my computer to take so
long to start up now, and then I get this message
sometimes that says it has to shut down because of a
program causing an error. If I choose to shut it down
immediately then I lose anything I have saved. Would this
be a virus ? I have the norton system installed and a
firewall as well. Thanks for the help
