Hello!
This is a folder in your windows folder which holds all
sorts of code you use often. XP speeds up and the boot
process and optimizes the launch of programs by using
prefetching. Windows observes the code and programs that
are used immediately upon bootup and creates a list of data
to prefetch very early in the boot process. Similarly, as
individual programs are launched, Windows keeps track of
different files and components are accessed. The next time
the application is accessed, Windows prefetches the
necessary items to expedite the application's launch.

The prefetch optimizing code exists both within the XP
kernel and the task scheduler service. The kernel keeps
track of pages that are referenced by a given process
immediately after the process is created. The service
transforms the recorded pages into prefetch instructions
for that process. The next time the process is created, the
kernel executes the prefetch instructions, speeding up the
creation of the process.

But when this folder is getting too full. XP won't start
the programs faster anymore. When you think this is the
case, just delete the content of Windows/Prefetch and start
again. After restarting your computer three times Windows
will again start your most used programs faster.

prefetch?
Posted: 08-16-2003, 05:56 AM
I'm running Windows XP Pro on a Dell desktop. Several
times recently, while searching for files, I've noticed
the files coming up in their 'normal' location and also
in the Windows\Prefetch folder. I've done a bit of
searching, and found:

1) Instructions on how to create a batch file to
automatically delete the files in the prefetch folder,
and

2) A recommendation to clean out all files (or at least
those more than 3 weeks old) from the prefetch folder
every month

Unfortunately, none of the information I tracked down
actually explained what prefetch is/does. An explanation
and any recommendations about cleaning out the folder
would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

Lisa

Prefetch helps files and applications load faster. I've never tried running
without it on XP so I can't tell you whether it does or doesn't but many
people find when the first install XP it seems to run a bit slower than they
thought. However, after a week or so, it begins to improve. This is
usually due to prefetch.
