print job won't completely spool

When I'm trying to print to a network printer, the job will go to the
spooler, and won't complete spooling. It stops about a third of the way, e.g.
64k/180k. After a minute or two I get the message "Document failed to print."

I've tried sending directly to the printer, creating a local printer port,
Standard TCP/IP port, moved spooler file to temp directory, change pagefile
size, applied hotfix for article 893225... NOTHING seems to work!
