print problem after standby

Win XP home edition SP2. The printer and port drivers are the ones embedded
in XP. Brother recommends no other driver, and I could not find any updated
port driver available from Microsoft. The plug and play install went smoothly
and the printer works fine under all conditions except the first print from
standby, when the printer prints multiple pages of gibberish. The printer
worked fine on a previous PC running Win 98 SE.
The first print is good when the PC is coming from a full off condition, but
not when coming from standby. It does not matterif the printer is off or on
when the PC comes out of standby. Brother recommended changing the parallel
port setting in the BIOS from ECP to standard but that did not solve the
problem.
If I tickle the printer/port from the command prompt with an "echo hello
control L>lpt1" the first command flashes all printer lights, but produces
no print. A subsequent command prompt or a print attempt from an application
works correctly. It does not matter if the printer is on or off when the
echo command is given so I assume I am waking up the port.
Can anyone give me some suggestions as to how to make the PC recognize that
there is a printer connected to the parallel port when coming out of standby,
other than running my .cmd file.
Thanks for any help.
