Printer does test page won't print .txt

Canon 2100(set default) on network physically connected to
win 98 through RJ-45 Hub
Have installed Canon XP drivers in XP box
Have installed it as network printer in XP.
Shows and when click properties test
wil print w/o error.

If I open Notepad or Wordpad and try to print
a simple text document, it just hangs , and eventually get
a not responding for the program. Print never comes up

It also loses the network link and requires rebooting.

Windows XP Pro in an AMD 1600 with 512mb ram.

tried every combination and just can't get it to print
anything but the test sheet.
