Printer Error after going offline

Hi. Would appreciate any help. HP 6100 was working fine with XP Professional.
Used 6100 to make copies. Sent a print job while 6100 was apparently offline.
Got Printer error message. Went through troubleshooter cycle, but did not fix
the problem.
Printer works fine. Printer error from all programs. Printing through USB.
Printer reset to online.
Q 1: Went through command prompts in troubleshooter. May have made a mistake
in what i typed. Could this have affected anything, and is there a way to
fix it. Does not print from command prompt.
Q 2: Final troubleshooting recommendation is to delete and reinstall ports.
Will the ports be reinstalled automatically or do I need software. Do not
have CDs.
Q 3: Any other suggestions would be appreciated
