How can I make my computer display the levels of black and colored ink when
printing? I have Windows XP, Word 2003, and a HP printer.

HP should include a Printer Status Monitor in their package.

What model of HP printer is it?

Usually, you enable printer status monitoring in the printer driver options.
In a few cases, enabling it may cause compatability problems with other
devices on a USB buss, or with a networked printer.

Older HP printers for which HP only supply XP drivers (not the whole
package) will not show ink levels as they may have done under earlier
operating systems..
