Printer on Vista can't be shared with XP

Posted: 11-26-2008, 01:07 AM
I just replaced the system that was hosting my Canon printer. I was able to
share the printer but when I try to install the printer on my other Xp system
it tells me that the driver is not compatible and asks for the location of
the .inf file. I loaded the disk and told it where to get it and it keeps
failing. I've tried to add the xp driver to the vista system and it fails.

The printer is a Canon Pixma IP 6600D and I would like to be able to share
it with both systems.

Sorry if this has already been resolved, but i was unable to find the answer
through the threads

So I'm going to guess that the Vista machine is x64.

Make sure the XP print driver name matches exactly the Vista print driver
name.

Vista Machine is indeed x64

How can I make sure that the drivers name match exactly?

You don't need to and it's too much work anyway

You can't create an RPC connection to the printer but you can create a local
printer that copies the data to the shared printer.

I see this as your configuration. If I have any of the pieces in the wrong
place rearrange and follow the steps for your configuration.

Vista x64 with Canon Pixma IP 6600D connected to the USB port and shared.

XP client machine can't connect since the driver name on x86 does not match
the driver name for x64.

For the XP machine to send data to the shared Canon, the first thing you
need to do is verify the share name on the Vista machine is ONE word. You
can do this with spaces in the share name but it's easier when you keep the
share name short and simple.

On the XP machine, create a local printer that "prints" to a Local Port.
The format for the Local Port is \\Vistamachine\CANON (your simple
sharename ). Select the driver you already installed or use Have Disk to
install the vendor driver. Next Next Finish.
