Printer problem

Posted: 07-16-2007, 10:58 AM
Hi
Got a weird problem that has suddenly cropped up. When ever I try and print
a web page out, all my printers disappear and I get a 'this device has
stopped working' etc.

The printer folder should show 2 printers plus pdf printer but it doesn't
and opening the printers folder brings another message saying that 'local
print spooler services is not running'. Going to services and restarting the
print spooler brings up another message, 'spooler sub system stopped working
and was closed'.
If I restart the PC, everything is fine. Printing documents etc is fine,
there is no problem.

TIA
Seven

Seven,

I found this using google: To fix this problem, open Internet Explorer and
follow these steps:

1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

2. On the Advanced tab, scroll to Settings, and clear the Enable third-party
browser extensions check box.

3. Click OK, close Internet Explorer, and restart your computer.

Now you should be able to print Web pages without a problem. Bear in mind
that when this option is disabled, you won't be able to use Internet Explorer
add-ons like the Yahoo Companion or Google Toolbar.

If this doesn't work and you don't get a solution here, try using google.
I'm sure this is a fairly common problem for which people have posted
troubleshooting steps to take.

Hi Freedy

Thanks for the suggetion, but it doesn't work. I've looked on Google, but
cant find much in relation to this problem and VISTA.

Seven,

Hardware not working properly almost always is caused by a problem with the
drivers. Keep checking with the manufacturer of the printer for updated
drivers. In the meantime, you might get lucky and discover a setting that
fixes it. Search the Internet for a forum devoted to printer issues. There
must some out there. Some printer manufacturers have troubleshooting guides
for their printers on their websites and also may have links on their
websites to forums. This may not be a Vista issue.

Hi Freddy

I'm not so sure that it is the printer drivers as I have 2 printers and
image and pdf 'printers' in the folder. If I use the 'print command' either
from quick print or print menu, the print spooler and it's subsystem stop
working and all printers disappear, it makes no difference which printer I
try and print to. I can't even install it again as it keeps coming up with
print spooler not working.

The drivers are all up to date for VISTA and this only started last week,
despite having Vista since Jan,

Have you installed any new programs since the time this problem started?

Seven,

I just had an idea. That is, sometimes resolving USB device issues like you
seem to have can be resolved by deleting the INFCACHE.1 file, which can get
corrupted with bad data and cause issues. The file is located at:
C:\Windows\inf. There, scroll down to the NFCACHE.1 file and right click it
and select delete. To do this, you will likely have to give yourself
permission to delete it, because of Windows built-in security. Just right
click the file, select Properties and then click on the security tab. Let us
know whether this pocedure does anything. Sometimes it does and sometimes
not. It does no harm to remove that file, even when it has nothing to do
with the problem. Just something to try.
