Printer Problem Pattern

Posted: 11-12-2003, 03:39 PM
I tried to post reply to some oher messages, but
couldn't. I see that several people are having problems
similar to mine.

These problems just started in the last day or so.
First, when trying to print, got message that no printers
were installed. (I have two printers on a little home
network) When I tried to reinstall, got message that
action couldn't be completed and something about spooler
unavailable. Finally, I shut down and then managed to
get evrything reinstalled. It worked for a little while;
then when I came back, it had all started over and I
can't get through to reinstall.

Since several people seem to be reporting a similar
problem, I wonder if there is some kind of virus or
something causing it. Any ideas or suggestions?

Printer Problem Pattern

I have an hp deskjet 5550 with similar issues. After I
print something (it can be multiple documents) the
printer is deleted, but gives the can't reinstall
message. I have to delete all the software and then
reinstall the printer each time I want to use it.
I have downloaded the XP driver from HP.
I have scanned for viruses - none.
Any guidance out there?

Something is causing the spooler or the RPC service (which the spooler
depends upon) to fail. This can be caused by virus (blaster was the most
recent) or a print driver that corrupts the memory in the spooler.

The spooler will restart if it fails up to 2 times, on the third failure it
stays dead unless manually restating ("net start spooler" in a cmd window or
you can set the Service to restart on failures after 2 (follow instructions
in the kb and open the Recovery Tab)
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;158042
Operation Could Not Be Completed, When Using Add Printer Wizard

But this does not really help fix a bad driver. If you are prompted to
submit an error report for the spooler please send it to us and the Error
Reporting group works with vendors (or dev team) to fix the issues that are
encountered the most.
