| I´m running Windows Vista Beta 2 on my PC. I have a Brother HL 2040 Laser printer connected to my PC via USB. I have tried to install the printer with the "built-in" Windows Vista driver as well as with the Windows XP driver that came with the printer. None of the drivers really seem to work on my PC. With the "Built-in" Vista driver the installation-process seems to work OK. and at the end of the installation i receive the message, "You should be able to use the printer now" But when trying to print I immediately receive the message "The printer is in an error state". The XP driver installation aborts before the installation process has ended. This is also the case, even if I uninstall the Windows Vista driver before trying to install the Win XP driver. I am (trying) to install the printer on USB002 Virtual printer Port for USB. On port 1 I have installed my HP Deskjet 920C that works fine with the Win Vista driver. Would it be possible, that any of the other Brother-drivers (in Windows Vista) for other Brother printers could work on my HL 2040 ??? Thanks for reply. | Guest

| You don't need to start another thread. I answered this already on your first thread. CH "HOS1972" <HOS1972@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:5C38DD63-AA09-4C6E-9B89-30D1F04D17DF@microsoft.com... Quote:

| Those are because of the incompetents that MSFT assings to Community--that and the duplicate messages. I hope your printer gets up. I gave you my bets tips. Brother Support in Memphis is pretty good at telling you cross coverage drivers but I think the Brother driver will work if you follow my directions. A lot of veteran computer users aren't in touch with "configuring a driver" the way I showed you on the Applications tab, but it can make all the difference in a printer driver's working. | I couldn't find the original thread, but I do know I had the same problem with my Brother MFC 5840cn and had no luck getting that to work except, for some reason, doing it through the share on my file server, which then posted the driver from XP x64 and that worked. (It's a network printer though) "Chad Harris" <HQ@MSFTtindenialovervistamess.com> wrote in message news:u6VAKqxuGHA.4756@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... Quote:

| That's another good tip. I can't explain the physiology of why, but I know that getting the hdw recognized first is often a leg up on drivers in general, printer drivers in particular Raven, ( or you will often get a false positive "16 bit subsystem error if you install the driver first, and then get the hdw recognized). and with respect to Vista, I've found that browsing to the driver file's location often makes a difference. In getting some of the older drivers to work that people say will never work, (Turtle Beach sound for example) you have to manuever through some wierd go arounds like getting one driver version onto XP, another onto Vista (on a dual boot) and making sure to install the control panel onto Vista and it will work. The sound driver is the most difficult thing I've had to deal with yet on Vista and it was great satisfaction to make it finally work. Now I can get it going on any new build. The sound is great on a Vintage 2000 driver that is no longer made any more. CH "Raven Mill" <nospammingdammit> wrote in message news:uEpWF3yuGHA.1436@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... Quote:
