Prints very slow to start

I have a Epson 2200 printer with USB 2.0 (NEC) controller
I believe.
The printer works but it takes a long time before it
starts. I can request a print from any program and
usually the dialog box will stay active for a couple of
minutes before it goes away and the print starts.
I am running XP with service pack one and I have just
updated the USB (windows update) with no effect.
