problem networking xp and 98

Posted: 08-03-2003, 01:54 PM
Hello,

I have 3 computers. Two of them are win98 and the 3rd is winxp. I can
network the 2 win98 computers with a crossover cable. I am unable to network
(crossover cable) the winxp computer with either of the win98 computers
(can't see eachother). I have read several posts on this issue. I have ran
into a pinging problem. When I connect a win98 and winxp computer together,
(cross over cable) I can ping each computer by IP address by not by host
name. I know I'm typing in the right host name(s) because I can self-ping
each machine using it's host name. Do I have to renew the IP addresses
after I connect two computers with a cross over cable? I can renew the IP
address on the win98 computer but I get an error (Unable to contact dhcp
server) when I try to renew the IP address on the winxp computer.
