Problem with system restore

Posted: 07-13-2003, 08:55 PM
When I start system restore, I get a pop-up message that
states "RSTRUI.EXE Entry Point not found". An additional
message says "Procedure Entry Point
RemoteAssistancePrepareSystemRestore could not be located
in the dynamic link library WINSTA.DLL".

This problem started 3 months ago after installing VPN-1
SecureRemote in order to allow me to connect to work from
home.

I have tried re-installing Windows XP not once, not twice
but 3 times and I still get this error. When I reinstall
Windows, once I tried the upgrade option, once I tried
the repair option and twice I performed a new install
option.

Can anyone assist me with getting System Restore to work
again? I absolutely have to have the VPN-1 SecureRemote
software installed on my machine - uninstalling it is not
an option.

Thanks.

Also, I put back the old drive in the system as a secondary drive and gave
it the letter L. Now the system restore tab is available but shows me the L
drive as being the system drive eventhough it was formatted NTFS and
contains nothing!!! Could it be related to volume serial number?
Thanks,

I'm also having the same problem from basically the same
scenario except I used the Seagate Disk Wizard 2003
utility to create my new hard drive and copy the old one.
Now get the "Path not found" failure when I click on the
System Restore tab. I ran 'srdiag' and in the
drivetable.txt file it creates, my old hard drive is
still listed (as drive E even though it no longer is
attached to my system at all. I suspect this has
something to do with the problem but have no idea how to
correct it. Would appreciate any help anybody gets on
this problem.

Sorry Lou, windows refuses to shut off system restore (eventhough I haven't
tried to shut it off through the registry keys) because either the system
restore tab is not accessible or it causes a run32.dll error.
Thanks anyway
Jean

Sorry missed again: I ran sfc/scannow and inserted the win xp CD and it
copied files for around 15 minutes, I rebooted and ended up with the same
problem. I've been searching for 2 days now a way to tell system restore to
look for my C drive instead of still looking for the old drive. I'm
convinced that the problem is an ID problem for the drives (something like a
personnal ID that each drive has). If I would know the registry key or the
config file where system restore pulls that info, I could change it and I'm
sure things would come back to normal. But nobody seems to know about this
extra-technical data. I've been posting the same questions on the french
version of this newsgroup without any results...Pretty bad with all the win
xp experts around. Simple questions get instant answers but when you get
really technical, no answers...except from you, Lou, who at least offered me
possible solutions.
Thanks again,

I have the same exact problem with XP system restore after
a hard drive upgrade. I emailed emachine, because
Microsoft says contact computer manufacture, and they
recommended doing an sfc /scannow and a check disk. I was
going to try them tonight, but after reading your post I
don't feel very confident. Just a note, after my drive
upgrade, the master is still the C drive. I agree, I can't
find an answer for this anywhere. Maxtor, my drive make,
doesn't have any suggestions either. This is getting very
frustrating.
My Original Post below:
I recently purchased a new hard drive, 80GB Maxtor
DiamondMax plus 9, ATA 133 7200 rpm. Maxtor provides S/W
to do a drive to drive copy. After completing the drive to
drive copy, and installing the new drive as the master, I
ran into a problem. I noticed that the Windows XP "System
Restore" tool does not work. When it is selected it
creates a error report to send to Microsoft. Since this
isn't working I worry that something else might be wrong.
Also, just to make sure it wasn't the Maxtor S/W, I used
PowerQuest Deploy Center to create an image of my original
hard drive, then restore the image to the new drive, and I
received the same errors. The drive is recognized O.K.
size etc., and other utilities work great, the
windows/emachine help, surfing the web, my TV tuner, DVD
s/w, etc.. The windows version, I believe, is XP SP1. Any
help would be very appreciated.

Maxblast is the pits I tried it & copied all except some software I had to
activate & Norton 2004 had to be reactivated & yes the restore didn't work I
used Norton Ghost 2003 & its fine MAXBLAST SUCKS! only bad thing ghost &
maxblast don't do is create the 7.8mb unallocated space it needs & can cause
problems best to install fresh use old hard drive as slave so you can copy
files.
