Problem with an USB MIDI keyboard

Posted: 03-11-2006, 03:08 PM
Hi,

I cannot get my Evolution Mk-461C USB midi keybord
work with my Acer Aspire 5672 WLMi (with Win XP Home OEM).

The device does not need any external driver and was working
ok in my old laptop with Xp Pro. Even if it looks like
Windows recognizes the device, no midi inputs are shown in
any of DAW applications (previously I could see 'USB Speakers'
listed among the midi input ports).

Any suggestion?

It looks like the mfrs web site lists a driver.
Evolution Mk-461C was used as the search string
Something needs to connect/point a midi app to the USB subsystem and the
keyboard. Normally, generic midi apps expect to see a midi cable (and
driver) connected to either the "game port" parallel port, serial port, or a
USB port. The apps generally arn't smart enough to know that a Midi device
is connected to a USB port. Your keyboard seems to have (as you describe it)
a built-in USB port. Windows likely sees the device, and doesn't know what
to do with it. The device manager may show the device as question marked, or
with something like a code 10.
There can be some conflicts with the built-in MS Synth. Somewhere between
win 3.1 and XP MS decided to reduce the midi capabilities. In 3.1, it was
fairly easy to split channels between internal and external devices, and
even use the MS synth as well. No longer.

Hi Travelmate,

I have the same problem with my Acer Aspire 5672 WLMi - Only in my case
it's a Novation ReMOTE25 SL.

This issue has to do with the Windows class compliant MIDI USB driver -
There's something about the Acer's audio system that seems to interfere
with this driver. All my other USB keyboards with custom drivers by
their manufacturers work fine on the Acer, while my other
class-compliant MIDI drivered controller keyboard (Studiologic VMK-88+)
has the same issue.

In my searches for a solution I have come across others who weren't
Acer owners having the same trouble - It seems to be sound card
related. Incidentally, my wife owns the Athlon 64 Acer notebook and it
doesn't have this issue (it also has a different sound system too).

I'll post here if I can figure this one out. It's a puzzler for sure.

Cheers,

Tony
