problems getting network printer to print from dos

Posted: 04-17-2004, 07:46 AM
I've been following the directions laid out in a previoius thread and am still unable to print from dos. System is wired lan, winxp home, hplaserjet 1200 with printserver, computer has lpt1 active in hardware profile although I have no parallel port. I entered the following on the command line
C:\> net use lpt1: \\toaster\HPLaserJ/ persistent:yes The following was printed out on the screen
The syntax of this command is
NET US
[devicename : *] [\\computername\sharename[\volume] [password : *]
[/USER:[domainname\]username
[/USER:[dotted domain name\]username
[/USER:[username@dotted domain name
[/SMARTCARD
[/SAVECRED
[DELETE] : [/PERSISTENT:<YES : NO>]

NET USE <devicename : *> [password : *] /HOM

NET USE [/PERSISTENT :<YES : NO>

C:\
I don't have any idea what all that means

The printer is connected via a mini printserver and I have also tried the following
C:\> net use lpt1: \\PSED3336\HPLaserJ/ persistent:yes I get a system error 66 message, "the network resource type is not correct." This is name of the printserver and the printer sharename exactly so I don't know what the problem is

Thanks, Bil

See my response in the thread "How can I print in WinXP from a DOS-based
program?".

If that doesn't help, it might be useful to know what "port" Windows XP
thinks your printer is on :

1. open Printers and Faxes
2. right click on the printer and select Properties
3. select the Ports tab
4. the port that the printer is on should be the one that is highlighted.
That port will also have a check mark beside it and have the printer's name
under the Printer column. What is shown in the "Port" and "Description"
columns for that port?

Where do you see the name "PSED3336"?
What make and model of printer is it?

It is perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question.

After the HPLaserJ, there should be a space then the
persistent.
net use lpt1: \\toaster\HPLaserJ /persistent:yes
