Problems with the USB devices after several days

Posted: 03-10-2006, 10:27 AM
hi...

I've got a strange problem with usb devices on my SP2 image (with all qfe's
available on the oem site).
after using some usb devices for several days, they are not working any
more!

to get the devices back to a working state, I have to reboot the computer or
unplug and replug in the devices.

I have seen this problem with our usb modem and our usb touch screen (elo).

any ideas what could cause such a problem?

thanks in advance

mario

Look in the setupapi.log and event log for any hints around the time of the
failure. Is it possible the machine is going into a sleep state at one
point, powering down the usb bus and not bringing it back up at S0 until you
force an event (unplug/replug)?

I have checked the setupapi.log and the event logs, but there are no
problems reported!

I can't image that the machines are going into sleep state...
the machines are gaming terminals and sometimes we had the problem during
playing of a game!

Any other ideas? this problem is really critical for us!

thanks in advance
mario

Hmm, perhaps you could try enabling verbose logging of the setupapi log and
see if that captures the failure? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906485

If that doesn't help, I would check to see if there's QFEs available for USB
(1.0/2.0) for XP-Pro that might help. Note that the secure site only has
security fixes, not every single hotfix or update available for Pro. since
XPe is based on the Pro binaries you should check for additional
non-security USB or PNP related updated.

Good luck!

Hi

Ok, with the verbose logging I havent any success. No problems are logged...

So I have to try the QFE's....
