| Jimmy - I already loaded the patch from the company and the software does allow me to operate as the administrator as long as the program is running. The problem comes in after the program is closed and the update is trying to load, then the system is defaulting to the Vista parameters thus sayeth the accounting software support people and defer me back to you as they are not proficient w/ Vista at this time. Is there another way for the system to temporarily recognize me as an administrative user as opposed to the default settings? As a computer friendly user, it appears that VISTA overrides and over protects. Thank you, bmv | Guest

| Hello, Unfortunately, this is still a problem with the software program, not Vista. In Windows Vista, you are always an administrator; however, programs must request from you permission to use your admin power. It is the responsibility of the company creating software to mark the parts of their programs that need permission from you to use admin power; Windows Vista cannot automatically determine this by itself. If the program is complaining you are not an administrator, that is because it is not asking you for administrator permission, which is the responsibility of the program. The patch they released probably modifies the main accounting program to work correctly without requiring admin permission from you at all (as I can't see why an accounting program would need admin permission). However, their updater program *will* need to ask you for admin power, since it will be updating the program's files, which is stored in an admin-restricted location. They can mark their updater program as requiring admin permission from you by including a vista-style manifest with their updater application, and then when the main program runs it, it will automatically prompt you for permission to run and then work correctly. -- - JB Microsoft MVP - Windows Shell/User Windows Vista Support Faq http://www.jimmah.com/vista/ | Guest
