programs running in the background

Sorry if this question is redundant. How do I tell which
programs are running at any given time? How do I disable
programs that start automatically when the computer is
turned on.

Thanks for your time and concern.

Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete.

Look at each program to see if it has an option not to start
automatically. If it doesn't, you can disable it by running
MSCONFIG from the Start | Run line.

Paul,
Open up the Task Manager to see whats running [ctrl+alt+del]. Another
responder has already told you about "msconfig". Easier to use/more
appropriate programs to work Startup Programs are "StartupCop" or "Startup
Control Panel" (the latter from Mike Lin's site; the former I believe is
available from PC Magazine's site or perhaps PC World). To see every program
loading at Startup, an easy way is to right click the Start button and open
the Programs sub-folder. If you are like the rest of us, there are some
there that should not be.

To disable files that runs automatically,
Start and Click run, type "msconfig" without the quotes
and click ok. Click the Startup tab to see a list of
files that runs automatically. You may also disable other
programs at your own risk by clicking and unchecking
Programs from the Services tab. Also, if your
Administrative Tools is visible in your Start Menu or
Programs Files, you can select Service to see what runs
automatically and let them be started manually or disable
them.
To see Administrative Tools,
Right click start and select Property.
Click the Start Menu tab and select the Customize...
button. Click the Advance tab and scroll until you see
Systems Administrative Tools. Take it from there...
