Quake 3 / Vista

Posted: 03-10-2007, 11:28 AM
Hello,

I encountered a problem in gaming experience while using Windows Vista
Ulitmate 32bit.
I noticed a framedrop of more then 200 fps, this framedrop can be reduced by
setting the graphics lower.
My default settings on winxp for this game are: 1280x1024 32bit (quality
settings maximum).
On Windows XP Pro i will get over 250 fps. (since no more is allowed, capped
at 250).
On windows Vista Ultimate with exactly the same settings i will get about 50
fps.

Specs:
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+ (2.20 GHZ)
1023 RAM
Radeon x800 GTO

Question:
1. Is Microsoft aware of this problem?
Since this will not be the only O.S/Game problem yet to come.

2. Am i correct when i say this is not mainly Microsoft but Radeons problem?
Since MS is not responsible for the power a grphxcrd can give.

3. Can i expect this to be fixed within the time to buy new hardware anyways.
Theory meaning: after 2 years everybody is bound to buy new hardware anyways
so why bother fixing it.

The answers to these questions do mean alot to me, and im sure to many other
people aswell as this will affect all financial and IQ-rated thinking of
getting over xp and start using Vista.

I hope to get an answer soon,

Regards,

1) Kind of. OpenGL isn't really supported in Vista and Q3 is a OpenGL
game. You also really need 2GB for gaming in Vista.

2) Yes. Drivers are very immature at the moment. You may recall nVidia
a few years ago when they suddenly had a massive jump in performance on
the release of a specific driver.

3) Yes. Next 6 months should see things improve dramatically.
