Question- how to format new HD

Posted: 01-15-2009, 11:37 PM
I'm running Win xp.
I pulled out a non-o/s 20G IDE hd and replaced it with a brand new
unpartitioned / unfomatted 120G IDE hd.

Win xp knows it's there, the driver is set up ok.

The problem is, the new hd doesn't show up in explorer or Disk Management,
and I can't remeber how to partition / format a new hd.

So, how do I do this?

Thnx

If XP knows it's there, it will show up in Disk Management, as
uninitialized, and you'll get the wizard.

So... how do you know that XP knows it's there?

It has to be initialised first, and you should get the wizard. In Disk
Management, rescan the disks. Once it's initialised, right-click for
partitioning and then formatting options.

Do you know if the older 20GB drive was a master / slave? Check the
newer 120GB drive and set the drive's jumper correct to same setting.
Then, the drive should show up in Device Manager and Disk Management.
Disk Management is what you need to use to partition / format this
drive.

Have you confirmed BIOS sees the drive? Device manager?

HDs/CD/DVD.
