Random lock-ups on Compaq Pres. 725

I experience random lock-ups, no key response, no video
movement. I have to power down and re-boot. I sent it to
Compaq, they corrected a heat problem and it was better
until I downloaded the latest Windows Update. It is as
bad now as ever. I uninstalled the update and it helped a
little. I am now leary of any new updates.

As a follow up, I found refrence on Compaq's support
communities of a problem with SP1 hotfix q317377.
Uninstaling it seems to solve the problems. Since I had to
wipe out my hard drive and start from scratch I have not
had a lock-up. I will be very careful with window update
in the future.
