RC1 File sharing with XP system

Posted: 09-14-2006, 06:56 PM
I have a small home network with a Vista RC1 system and an XP system. Both
systems are on the same workgroup. I'm able to see all the shared resources
from both systems. I can access all the shared resources from the Vista
system but not from the XP system.

From the XP system I can see the folders I shared on the Vista system
including the Public folder. I can access the Vista Public folder from the XP
system but not the two Vista folders I set up to share. I get access denied.
I've compared the security on these two folders with the Public folder and
see no difference.

Advice is sought.

Also, does someone have a good book suggestion on XP/Vista security. While I
was able to avoid the complex security system in XP it seems I'm going to
have to have a better understanding of it for Vista.

I have had the same problem in Beta and now RC1...I have studied File
sharing documentation, but todate, I can on manage to open files I have set
as sharing, if I try to open up any of these files, I get a denied
message....Is it necessary to set up sharing all sub folders ...this was not
necessary on any XP version...again

I have not found a good book, onlt the online help for Vista.

as per Ron
Advise is sought
Thanks
John

I should have added that from Vista RC1 I can access all shared files on
other computers using XP on my net.

Are you running another Firewall other than the stock one that came
with Vista?
Did you look at the checked permissions (exceptions) in "Allow a
program through windows firewall".

Note to MS: "A balloon help to expand what this line item
(program/feature) allows for when the title is neither obvious (to
non-guru users) or exclusively used for the stated task.

Hi Steve

To answer your questions.

Are you running another Firewall other than the stock one that came
> with Vista?
// I have firewall in Netgear router but don't believe this one is an issue.
I have MS firewall on all my XP PCs //
> Did you look at the checked permissions (exceptions) in "Allow a
> program through windows firewall".
//I have the file and print serving checked in all firewalls including
Vista//

Thanks for your help

Hello,

Have you set up Windows Vista to not require a password to connect to shared
resources? If so, when connecting to your Vista machine, the connections
will be authenticated as a guest. You will need to give the guest or
everyone permission to access the additional folders from their respective
security tab.
