slower - seems to wait for 3/4 seconds before doing anything. no HD
activity so it's not hitting swap.. it's just pausing for no apparent
reason.
Good point: After I installed the network driver (still not supported
officially by vista.. sigh..) it went off and found the sound driver
automatically, which was a bit of a shock (especially as I had the
volume up at the time!). I presume it does that with all drivers.
Bad point: All the common options are hidden/moved randomly.. I've just
spent the last hour finding all the options that I'm used to setting &
still haven't found them all. The transition from NT4 to Win9x was bad
enough but this is going to need a complete re-learning. It would be
nice if there was a 'vista for windows users' tutorial so we didn't have
to work all this out for ourselves.
Odd point: Couldn't find the 'run' option that's the most used option
on Windows, but if you type cmd.exe into the search bar it works as a
run anyway... which is wierd... Unfortunately just 'cmd' or 'notepad'
doesn't work so I really need to find the missing option and stick it
back in the menu.. I have no need for a search bar but *lots* of need
for a command bar..
The monitor settings are still a bit odd (was also a problem in Beta2).
If you boot with no monitor (as I & many others do - all my machines
are behind a KVM) it doesn't detect the monitor size and defaults to a
1024x768. On XP you could drop to 800x600 then back up to 1600x1200
since it would redetect when you change resolution. Vista no longer
does this.. you have to reboot to get the monitor size correct.. As it
is I only have one vista box but it's a pain enough - I'd hate to think
of the stress involved in rebooting 10 sequentially...
I can't for the life of me find out how to use the NFS client (didn't
even try the server..).. there are no options anywhere for it. It's
definately installed.. I even deinstalled and reinstalled it. I reckon
there's a button somewhere called 'show nfs option in network shares'
but it's hidden so deep in the OS I can't find it.
