If you recording you intend to make is less than 60 seconds, use the
built-in Windows Sound Recorder. You'll find it here: Start button|All
Programs|Accessories|Entertainment>Sound Recorder.
Sound Recorder will store the file in WAV format, not mp3, but any media
player that plays mp3 files will play an .wav file no problem, and a
60-second wav file shouldn't be too big for email. If you *really* want it
in mp3 format, there are several freeware tools to quickly compress that wav
into mp3 format, including MusicMatch Jukebox and CDEx.
If your recording will be longer than 60 seconds, consider "StepVoice,"
which I discovered only last week but have not yet used myself:
http://stepvoice.com/ It will store your recording in mp3 format,
apparently.

THANK YOU IAN ! ! ! StepVoice is perfect! I was needing to record for longer than 60 seconds (so the windows sound recorder was limiting) but this lets me record an entire song. And the best part is that it immediately converts the recording to MP3 so I don't have to convert it from a wav file to send an email! It's really easy too. Again, thank you!Chrissy
