Recovering Data from Easy Transfer *.MIG file without key?

Posted: 09-25-2006, 02:52 AM
I was hoping that someone may be able to help me with a problem I created for
myself (sheepish grin).

I installed Windows Vista Beta 2 a couple of months ago and used the easy
transfer tool to backup email, contacts, and favorites information.
Unfortunately, I found that I couldn’t test the Beta 2 product effectively on
my hardware so I uninstalled it and went back to the Windows XP OS that came
with my computer. Once I had done that, I realized that I wasn’t able to
restore the saved files and settings from the SaveData.MIG file that was
created by the easy transfer tool back to my XP box. After searching Google
and Microsoft.com for a while, I decided it was just another bonehead mistake
that I was going to have to learn to live with.

So, along comes Vista RC1 and I decided to give it another try. The good
news is that RC1 works much better with my hardware and I’m pretty impressed
with some of the changes from XP. Before loading Vista this time around I
saved the newer email that had accumulated in between my 2 attempts at
installing Vista and I don’t have any trouble accessing it. The bad news is
that I’m still unable to recover my old email from the SaveData.MIG file,
which I still have from my attempt with Beta 2. The easy transfer tool that
comes with RC1 asks me for a key that I don’t remember ever receiving when I
backed up my data with the easy transfer tool that came with Beta 2.

The question is: Is there any way to extract my data from the SaveData.MIG
file without a key? Obviously, I’ve lived with this situation for a while
but it would be really great if I could get my data back. :-)

TIA for anything you can do to help in this matter,
Carl J. Bauman
