cable modem? If the either of the former, does connecting directly to the modem resolve the behavior? How does the WinXP machine connect? If you connect the Vista machine the same way and in the same location, does the behavior persist? If you install IE7 (which can be uninstalled, returning the machine to IE6) on the WinXP machine, do you see the same behavior? (I can't imagine that it would but YMMV.) ============================= Required reading IMHO before installing IE7: Sandi's Installation Tips <= FOLLOW THESE TIPS TO THE LETTER! http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install [And I strongly recommend using http://www.microsoft.com/windows/dow.../getitnow.mspx as the installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update. Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after installing IE7 and install any critical updates offered. If Optional Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.] Uninstalling IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6) http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html [also see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927177] IE7 (Un)Installation and Anti-Malware Applications: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/200...lications.aspx ============================= What anti-virus application or security suite is installed on the Vista machine (name & version)? What anti-spyware application(s) (if any), other than Windows Defender? What third-party firewall firewall is installed (if any)? Quote:
bizarre issues since early Jan-08. I dunno what's wrong or when it'll be fixed. MS ain't talking about it. These issues have not affected NNTP (newsreader) access and I recommend that you do so. | Wow - allot of info below, but here (to the best of my ability) are the responses. The Vista machine, even though it's a desktop, connects via a wireless router. The XP machine is directly connected to the same router. I can try connecting the Vista machine directly but given that this problem seems to be reletively recent (less than 1 month) and they've been connected this way for almost a year it doesn;t make sense. While I'd like to "test" the XP machine by installing IE7, I cannot. That is my work PC and we have VERY stringent rules - i.e. (no pun intended) I cannot install any software of my own. P.S. We've been specifically reminded of that rule with respects to IE7 (?) I'm currently using ZoneAlarm Security Suite adn have been for almost a year: ZoneAlarm Security Suite version:7.1.078.000 TrueVector version:7.1.078.000 Driver version:7.1.078.000 Anti-virus engine version:3 Anti-virus signature DAT file version:20080129162000 Anti-spyware engine version:5.0.189.0 Anti-spyware signature DAT file version:01.200801.3235 AntiSpam version:5.0.0.8843 Thanks to everyone for trying to help me with this issue. All of your quick responses are, well, impressing the hell out of me. Thanks I'm still in the process of running a search on the whole PC for anything "temp" to try to find out whrer this stuff is being stored. thanks again "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote: Quote:

| Everything in my previous reply notwithstanding, other Vista (and WinXP) users have seen similar unexpected and seemingly unresolvable problems using ZA Security Suite. While tweaking the ZA suite's settings may resolve your issues, you may want to test by (1) uninstalling ZA Security Suite (after making sure you know your Product ID in case you wish to reinstall), (2) enabling the Windows Firewall, (3) Resetting IE again [I know, but...], and then (4) installing another Vista-compatible anti-virus application.* I'd especially recommend trying the above if (1) the WinXP machine is not running ZA Security Suite and/or (2) if connecting the Vista machine directly to the modem does not resolve the unwanted behavior. ===== * I can highly recommend NOD32 and Kaspersky (both offer 30-day free trials; both include a firewall). If cost is a factor, you might consider either Avira AntiVir or Avast4 (both free; I do not recommend AVG AV). -- ~PA Bear T. Kainz wrote: Quote:
