I like NVIDIA a whole lot better than ATI (see Post's Below), just FYI.

Regarding R:E Would this system work
Posted: 05-11-2006, 04:17 AM
And on a similiar topic; I noticed Andre listed the ATI Radeon Mobility
x1400 as supporting Aeroglass.

I recently purchased a Vista capable laptop;-in part due to the excellent
advice from this group; with a 256Mb ATI x1400 GPU. Pardon my tangent;back
to the point.
Before I had a Nvidia FX5200 that worked also;and the Nvidia had an option
in it to make Windows transparent. "Aeroglass" like. It was cool. But I
can't find an option in the x1400 anywhere to do this. Sent an e-mail to
ATI-no response. Does anyone have this card and know if it can be setup to
do this or do I need to wait for the Vista public Beta to find out?

Are you talking when you drag windows how the window goes transparent? If
so, yes, the Ati Radeon can do it. (I'm not sure if it does this in Vista,
but it does in XP.) Download the Ati Hydravision via Ati's website. Then,
it should. My x1600 pro does, and so does an older Radeon 9200SE I've used.
It also has an option to put a shadow on windows and fade windows into view,
but in my opinion, the shadow is cheezy and the window fading is slow.
Maybe you'll like it though.

When you say Transparency, are you referring to the Glass effect? Because,
it doesn't get more transparent than based on my experience.

LOL Andre,
Yes,Travis is correct. The Nvidia does make a "Glass Effect"
when you drag the windows. I can't wait to try out my new laptop with the
Vista Beta public release!!!! Hopefully it won't be as "transparent" as your
experience! :-)

Zack has some good links with driver listings for ATI, as well as to ATI's
Vista page, on his vistabase.co.uk site.
http://www.vistabase.co.uk/welcome.p...graphics/index

I don't see the x1400 listed as supporting AeroGlass (yet)

I've had just as many problems with an NVIDIA as I've had with an ATI. (I'm
not saying that NVIDIA is better.) I like NVIDIA for some reasons and I
like ATi for others. The NVIDIA does better in Doom3 and is more
customizable, and to me anyway, the software doesn't feel as bloated and
doesn't take as long of time that the ATI does to load the software. (I
really miss the custom screen resolutions option.) However, the ATI (mine
in particular) does better for pixel shaders. I've had one NVIDIA fail on
me, and another that has to have the fan oiled frequently. (That is
probably due to the manufacturer, Mad Dog, and not NVIDIA though.) On the
other hand, I've never had an ATI fail on me, but I have had more conflicts
with certain games with ATI's, like House of the Dead 2. I do slightly
prefer NVIDIA, if you can't tell by my context, but, I don't see much wrong
with ATI's either. They're both good.
