RegCleaner & XP

Posted: 12-23-2003, 12:57 PM
Hi all.

I'm a relative newbie to XP, having just moved from Windows Me.

Anyhow, I had great success with a registry cleaner with Me, called
RegCleaner. I have installed it on my new XP machine and it is playing up.
When starting via the desktop icon, by double clicking, it does not launch.
But viewing my Windows task manager (CNTRL-ALT-DEL) it shows up as a running
process...Sometimes, though after the 2 or 3rd time it *will* launch
successfully......

Is there issues with this program and XP? I've done a bit of research on
Google, and some people say a registry cleaner is unnecessary, others say
use one (and RegCleaner is one recommended).

What should I be using, if not RegcCeaner??

Any ideas?

Thanks in anticaption.

Laurie.

The old RegClean utility is not compatible with Windows XP.
It really is not necessary to use a registry cleaner, but if you insist,
System Mechanic (www.iolo.com) is an excellent choice.

Who is the author of the program you are using? There are a couple of apps
that sometimes get confused for each other. One is RegClean - which Carey
was referring to and the other is RegCleaner. I agree that RegCleaner works
nicely with XP but the old MS RegClean likely is not very effective on XP.

Laurie,
In my case, "MS RegClean 4.1" program works with my Dell w/XP. Now granted, I am not knowledgeable on how thorough the program is in cleaning up the registry. And what I have read, it doesn't claim that it will fix everything, as maybe some of the more robust "cleaners" out there, do. So I keep the backup *.reg file for a while before deleting it.

Laurie, are you referring to another program called "RegCleaner" (freeware/shareware), which is available on the web in different versions? Some versions may not be compatible with XP, some might be.

Greetings --

Is the version of RegCleaner you're using expressly designed for
use on WinXP? If not, it's pretty much guaranteed to do more damage
than good.

Having seen the results of inexperienced people using automated
registry "cleaners," I can only advise to you to avoid them all.

The only thing needed to safely clean your registry is knowledge
and Regedit.exe. If you lack the knowledge and experience to maintain
your registry by yourself, you also lack the knowledge and experience
to safely configure and use any automated registry cleaner, no matter
how safe they claim to be.

I always use Regedit.exe. I trust my own experience and judgment
far more than I would any automated registry cleaner.

Hi.
Thanks Carey for the advice. I have "RegCleaner" by Journi - forget his last
name.......worked absolutely flawlessly on Win Me; I now have XP
