Default reinstall

I am having trouble establishing a home network from my desktop to my
laptop. I try but i get a message saying that an error occured. In addition
when I start my main machine I get an error saying that a file failed to
load at startup. I am thinking a XP reinstall will install the missing file
and that this may also resolve the network issue. My question is how do I
do a reinstall of XP without losing data?

Hi, You can do a "Repair Install",but it would help if you can tell us a
exact problem you are having.

Default Reinstall

My dell latitude hangs during the reinstall of XP when it is preparing the installation it hangs when it gets to the point where it states setup will complete in approximately 31 minutes. I had a previous problem where it stopped at 34, but I turned of the USB support in the bios and it got further. If I boot from the CD it says that there is a current upgrade being preformed. then gives options, if I were to stop the current install and proceed with a fresh install will that format my drive ?
I'm really trying to save some data that I just got.
