remote administer

Posted: 09-28-2003, 04:04 PM
Hi all,
I have a problem I would like to check with some knowledgable people.
I have 2 XP home computers on my home lan as well as another XP home
system running at a friends home. On my main system I run XP Pro and would
like to be able to administer all the home computers from my main one as
running up and down stairs as well as driving across town to get anything
done is annoying as hell. I have already set up an administration account
with the same user name/password on all machines and would like to know what
I should do from there.
Friend has asked me to administer hers since I built and installed all
her software as well as control who gets an account and such in the house.
She has asked if there was a way for me to be able to lockout accounts at
certain hours and if I would also be able to disconnect them if needed as
she knows nothing about computers other than basic user knowledge. Any help
would be greatly appreciated as I am at a lose on where and exactly what to
do. I know XP Pro has the remote desktop but did not see an option for it
in the home version so am lost.

TIA

Look at using NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing (RDS) or VNC in order to access/control an XP Home
box remotely...

You can get the VNC software from http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/ , http://www.realvnc.com or
http://www.tightvnc.com

Note that the VNC data stream is *NOT* encrypted like the RDS data stream is. Over the public
internet that is a potential security risk. Some folks run VNC through VPN or SSH tunnels.

NetMeeting is built-in to XP and 2000 and can *NOT* be upgraded. Look at this KB article for help
with RDS...

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;233175

As far as restricting computer access to certain hours for certain individuals you can look at this
page for help. I don't know if it will work for XP Home or not....

Al,
Thanks. I will look into both those options. I do know I have a vpn
connection setup on the remote system so if VNC seems the better choice, at
least that portion of the security risk would be closed.

You can also tunnel the VNC stream using SSH, which also provides a
secure connection...
