Remote Assistance: "A program cannot be started"

Posted: 10-17-2003, 07:21 AM
Win XP Pro, no SP, Windows Messenger 5.0, MSN Messenger 5.0. In
Control panel - system - remote, remote assistance is activated.

When I use remote assistance from my laptop by the interface of
rcimlby.exe to invite a remote partner (for testing: my desktop
computer), be it by messenger, email or file, after some steps I
receive the warning from Internet Explorer: "A program could not be
started. Repeat the procedure" (translated from German).

When I initiate Remote Assistance by the interface of one of the
Messengers, the remote machine starts "Connecting with <MyLaptop>". I
can even verify network traffic (in Zonealarm, if activated, but
regularly it is turned off). But the remote machine never connects.

Everything works fine in the other direction, from desktop to laptop.
I am also aware of alternatives likes RD, PcAnywhere or the VNC
family. But since my team decided to use RA, I am asking for advice
how to make RA work. Thank you.

From a post by Mark Ferguson:

Open a command prompt and run:

sessmgr -service

In the meantime, I tried

- Run: sessmgr -service plus reboot,
in normal and in safe mode,

- Run: gpedit.msc:
activation of the 2 entries in Admin Templates - System - RA

- Run: SFC /SCANNOW plus reboot,

- reinstallation of XP according to method 1 in
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;315341

all in vain. Does anyone by chance have another advice?

Tim

What Messenger client do you have on this machine - the default
Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger. The use of MSN Messenger has
caused similar issues in the past...
