Remote Desktop & Windows Media Player

Posted: 01-28-2004, 07:12 AM
I want to use remote desktop to control the computer
hooked up to my stereo - stereo is played in various
rooms in the house. This way if I am in another room I
can change the music.

When using remote desktop I get error "0xC00D11BA: Cannot
play the file", it does not believe there is a working
sound card.

The music can be played when controlled locally.

I do have my remote desktop settings for Remote Computer
Sound to "Leave at remote computer".

I hope this was not done by design.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi Paul,

I decided to search the Microsoft Knowledge Base for your issue, and
unfortunately it IS by design.

Unable to Play Audio in Windows Media Player When You Are Using a Remote
Desktop Connection

I wish I had better news for you. However, if you would like to provide
constructive feedback to the Windows Media team in this newsgroup thread, I
will see that they receive it. It's customer input that will make our
products better, and I'd be glad to offer yours to the Windows Media group.
:-)

Hi Folks,

I found this to be a useful work around the problem. First log on to
the computer where the music files reside or the client that you are
connecting to. Then open up your media player, then play a song. Then
try connecting via Remote Desktop and everything should work. Note:
This has been a 50/50 solution for me. However, when I use MusicMatch
it certainly works all the time. While I am a large MSFT supporter and
rather use media player, I've moved to Musicmatch simply because of
the reliability of playing music via RDC.

Perhaps in XP SP2 they will address this issue.

All the best

Damon

You can also control Windows Media Player 9 on your server with a web
browser using our PlayerPal software. This negates the need for
Remote Desktop.

PlayerPal is similar to browseamp (a tool for WinAmp). You can see
all the details at www.playerpal.com. We also discuss some other
alternatives out there.
