Thanks, but there has been no changes on video devices. hardware or drivers.

this sounded like a good lead.
After removing the KB and restarting this desktop I am still experiencing
the same issue.

"old ATI driver" problem. Both the REMOTE and LOCAL computers had ATI
cards in them (both using X1300 Radeon chip, but different
manufacturers). After updating the drivers to the latest version the
problem has gone away. Odd that.
