Remove Win 98SE from Win XP Dual Boot Installation

With my hard drive divided into two partitions and with Win 98SE in C-partition, I installed Win XP Pro in D-partition in a dual boot setup (using the New Install option). I, now, have all of my programs (except for a couple of DOS programs) working perfectly under Win XP Pro. So, I would like to get rid of Win 98SE and have Win XP Pro utilize the entire hard drive as one partition. I don't want to re-install any of the software currently installed under XP. How do I go about this? Also, when I am finished, I plan to install Microsoft's Virtual PC in Win XP Pro, so I can use Win 98SE to run the two DOS programs that run better in the Win 98SE environment than they do in the Win XP Pro environment. I have the latest version of Partition Magic and Disk Image. Also, I currently backup both the C & D partitons to a second hard drive using System Guardian

Hope this is clearly stated.

You should have selected "New Installation" only if you had an
available empty partition or drive. Now you have both Windows
98 and Windows XP residing in the same partition which is going
to eventually cause stability problems. I would suggest you perform
a backup of your files and documents and proceed with a "clean install".

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

NOTE: If you have an internal Zip Drive installed, physically disconnect the
EIDE and power cable to it before proceeding, otherwise your main
hard drive may not be assigned the customary C: drive letter.
After installing Windows XP, you may then reconnect it.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete all the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

Can you answer this
When you installed XP, was it as a new installation on the D Drive and did you then reinstall all the applications into your D Drive under XP. Or was it as a separate Operating System on D Drive with it pulling in the registry details from your C Drive 98 system, where Xp registered all the Applications being on C Drive

If it is the latter then you can use Partition Magic to move the applications to your D Drive and then format C when you know all your applications and data have been moved and work successfully from the D Drive.

That is what I was afraid of: I didn't make it clear what I had done. I used the Advanced option during installation, so Win 98SE in in the C-partition and Win XP Pro is in the D-partition. I, then, installed all of the applications which I used to run under Win 98SE into the Win XP Pro partition

Do I still go thru the long, detailed procedure you presented? And will it require me to re-intall all of my programs? I really would like to be able to keep the XP installation and all of the programs intact. Everything is working properly except for the two old DOS programs - which work, but the window they present is only one third of a screen, so everything is scrunched together. The Quatro Pro calculations, etc., all work, but I fugure I can make them work properly once I install MS Virtual PC under Win XP Pro

It was a separate installation of XP into the D-partition on the first hard drive. Then, I reinstalled all software/programs into XP. So, I could run all programs in either the Win 98SE on the C-partition or in Win XP Pro on the C-partition. Each partition had it's own registry. My backup using System Guardian backup each partition in separate partitions on the second hard drive.
