There is no 'repair' option on vista like on XP. With the higher end
versions of Vista, Business, Enterprise, Ultimate you do have an option
called Complete backup and restore which creates a shadow copy image of your
system but you need to completely backup your pc first using complete backup
and restore, because the repair option needs the imaged backup.

Yes there is. Boot with the dvd and proceed to the Install Now page and
stop. Look in the lower left and you will see a link, "Repair Your
Computer."

[note: part of this conversion accidently went to email, I've put those
parts below so all can see]

Running sfc /scannow isn't nearly as complete as running a repair install in
XP was, and certainly didn't fix the problem I want a repair install for.
It is worth trying though.

Yes there is. He can run "sfc /scannow" from a command prompt just like XP.
It needs to be an elevated command prompt. The WinRE tools include a
command line as well as some other tools.

From: Dan Andersen

That is not what he is asking. That only offers to do system restore or
complete pc restore from backup, or command prompt. It is nothing like the
repair install in XP that puts but all files to a nice fresh state.

Colin have you tried this? I will have to look at it, but i would assume
that 'Repair your computer' option would take you to the system recovery
tools and. other than the repair via 'complete pc backup and restore' i
can#'t see any other way of doing a repair install. unless one can
re-install over the existing copy without damaging any programs that are
already installed (that's something i need to try)

You can just do an upgrade-in-place. If you have Vista Ultimate installed
and launch Setup from the Vista desktop you will have the option to do an
upgrade. That's how you do a repair install. The upgrade option is not
just for legacy editions of Windows or to a higher edition of Vista. You
can 'upgrade' Vista Ultimate to itself as well.

Thanks Colin, i'll certainly give that one a try. I'm having a few problems
with video live icons not showing on video folders (a bug which ,apparently,
should have been fixed in RTM). As i dual boot i'm not in a position to do a
system restore because i have lost the system restore points for that
period.

John if you you can boot to the Vista Desktop you can run the Vista install
from the DVD and select Upgrade to do a 'repair install'. If you can't boot
to the Desktop try booting from the Vista DVD and select one of the Repair
options to see if you can get the system to boot to the Desktop and then run
the Upgrade.

As i thought, Colin, when you click on the "Repair Your Computer" link it
simply takes you to the system recovery tools, the options of which are:
a.. Startup repair - This automatically fixes problems that are preventing
Windows from starting
b.. System Restore - This will Restore Windows to an earlier point in time
c.. Windows Complete PC Restore - This will completely restore your entire
PC - programs, system settings and files - from a back up that you have
previously created (Windows Vista Business, Enterprise and Ultimate only)
d.. Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool - This checks your computer's memory
hardware for errors
e.. Command Prompt - This opens a Command Window

The command prompt is where you launch such tools as SFC.
